How To Spot an Abuser: Clue #4 Shaming
Everyone wants and deserves to be in a good relationship, but sometimes it takes awhile to realize that you've gotten yourself into a bad one. If your partner is physically assaulting you, it's clear that you're in an abusive relationship, but what about other types of negative relationships?
An emotionally abusive relationship can be just as damaging as a physically abusive one, but it can also be more subtle and harder to discern. People are more likely to stay longer with someone who's abusing them in a less obvious way. It important to recognize the signs of emotional abuse, as this will help you to get away from a toxic partner. Of course the sooner, the better.
Here is a sign your with an emotional abuser: They behave in ways that humiliate or shame you. If they belittle you in any way, either privately or in public, your relationship is emotionally abusive.
In my book, Urge Overkill: A Story of Breaking Free, my boyfriend would call me fat. It was a deliberate play at making her feel bad even though she was of average weight and athletic. There were other put downs too. They became progressively worse. This was before the physical abuse started.
If you answered ‘yes’ to feeling emotionally abused in your relationship, you may actually be in an unhealthy or abusive relationship. In this section, you’ll find more information on the types of abuse, why people abuse and why it’s so difficult to leave.
